Playoffs Page   (Playoff Predictions Past Playoffs - 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011

"x" Means that in the prediction the player is estimated to not play those games.  Example - Vancouver and Los Angeles is predicted to play 6 games.  So D. Sedin scores 1.35 PPG x 6 games = 8 first round points.  If this series goes less than 6 games, say 4 or 5, he will likely get less than 8.  If it goes 7 games, he might get more.

"-" Means the predictions are based on a half game.  So New Jersey and Philadelphia are expected to play 5.5 games.  So if they play 5, the estimates will be lower, if they play 6 the estimates higher.

Here is the estimates the Yearbook has always used.

Seeds 1 and 8 = 5 games (NYR at Washington and Chicago at Vancouver)
Seeds 2 and 7 = 5.5 games (Buffalo at Philadelphia and Los Angeles at San Jose)
Seeds 3 and 6 = 6 games (Montreal at Boston and Phoenix at Detroit)
Seeds 4 and 5 = 6.5 games (Tampa Bay at Pittsburgh and Nashville at Anaheim)

Ottawa shouldn't have too much trouble disposing of Edmonton but the series will come down to the Detroit-Phoenix series for GM's Mike and Ray and the Vancouver-Chicago series for GM Scott.  Scott could overcome some of the 5 he is set to lose (that is with Bolland getting 3) by a longer 6 or 7 game series in Chicago, with Toews topping the 5 we give him.  A shorter series one for Phoenix and having Stamkos not topping 7, which may be light in 6.5 games.

Ottawa (To win the Cup) - Detroit or Phoenix matching up with Philly, Pittsburgh or Tampa.  Is expected to lose a close second round series against New Orleans and would be best served to have someone pull an upset as Ottawa gets the lowest seed left in the second round, but the CTR has that being the 8th seeded Wolverines.  The NHL matchups were not favorable (in our view) as the Sens can at best have 4 players in round two, but on the flipside they are guaranteed at least three.  Outside of a matchup only Stamkos or Phoenix will likely give Mike and Ray a Cup.  If Stamkos goes out in round one, this team will be very hard pressed to keep advancing, so a Tampa Bay run at least to the third round is key.

Edmonton (To win the Cup) - It would take Chicago going as there is no matchup in the East unless it is the Sabres and that is asking way to much of a miracle.  If the Hawks can put it together, with a healthy Bolland, GM Scott would have a nice semi-finals and finals chance, but the first two rounds are going to be quite the stretch.  The Oil will clearly have to pull a serious upset in round one, likely scoring at least the 25 we give them and in round two will need to either see Anaheim and Boston out if it is Quebec (Matt) or Buffalo knocking out Philadelphia in the first round of the NHL playoffs if it is Andrew's Chicago team.  After that, ride Toews to the finals.

How many times have we seen something like this?  The CTR Playoff Predictions are calling for this Quebec Nordiques to win the NHLP Championship by beating GM Andrew's Chicago team in the NHLP Finals.  The problem is GM Matt may not even win in round number one.  He is in tough and will need every point possible to beat GM Joel.  In round one Perry must continue to score and Matt could help his cause with longer series in Boston, San Jose and Washington or a shorter Detroit series where GM Joel is expected to get 8 points.  We estimate Daniel Sedin will get 9 points in 5 games, so a longer 6 or 7 game series would help Joel pull this upset.  GM Matt surprisingly picked Detroit as the tie-breaker, when they have struggled, and he would best be served if they continue to struggle in round one.  If Matt doesn't win the Cup, we predict it will be at the hands of GM Joel in round one.

Quebec (To win the Cup) -  GM Matt is CTR #2 for a reason.  If the home teams all win in round one, Matt will have a full 7 players in round two and a team of 4 in the semi-finals with Washington or San Jose expected to give him a 2 man finals team.  He could also replace Washington with his two Bruins and have a much better team still.  No one will want this team in the later rounds if the favorites are winning.  It is GM Matt's Cup to lose (as it was last year and he succeeded to lose it then as well).  Prediction:  NHLP Champions.

Vancouver (To win the Cup) - GM Joel can do many other GM's a huge favor and win in round one against the predicted eventual Champions.  At 28 first round points, GM Joel is the highest scoring team predicted to lose in the first round.  If he can win, he could run the table with the Red Wings or Vancouver with Sedin, but losing either of those teams in round one or two could just kill this team outright.  It can happen but he must knock out as good of NHLP team as any right off the bat.

Both teams are down a player and neither team is expected to light it up in round one.  GM Jr is a 5 point underdog to a team that is predicted to go to the NHLP Finals.  A full 7 games from Detroit would help GM Jr, while the shortest possible series in Philadelphia could totally change this into Jr's favor.  Only 2 of the NHLP 16 playoff teams are expected to get less player games than Jr's predicted 32.5, so longer series on his side will help, except in Chicago where Torres will have no answer for Hossa.  It really is about the Flyers for GM Andrew.  That is why we have this team going to the Cup, even if they will then lose it all.  Giroux and Carter are at 10 points in 5.5 games, so Andrew does not want to see them sweep or not reach the 10 as things tighten in a hurry then.

Calgary (To win the Cup) - GM Jr was the first to admit it was an off year.  That could turn around by beating out his arch-rival GM Andrew in round one.  If that can happen with a Wings win, Lidstrom and Franzen are strong enough for 10 any round, so Jr would get stronger as he moves along with them.  If he won and played Ottawa (Mike and Ray) in round two, he'd be well off as they are down to 3 or 4 players and would take a hit with Detroit in, paving the way for Jr to easily move into the NHLP Semi-Finals where he'd look good with the Wings.  So a miserable season can be turned into something memorable but just winning the first round isn't promising.

Chicago (To win the Cup) - They are predicted to get there but be out of players.  Of course if the Flyers get there again, GM Andrew would be the Champs for it would be Quebec (Matt) with no players.  That is how it all shakes out on paper, but paper don't win Championships.  Andrew will need scoring in round one, something he may lack if the Flyers don't get 5.5 games and score him 10 points.  Anything less makes for sleepless nights for the dream starts to slip.  Don't expect anything here if the Flyers go out.  In round two Andrew is expected to get Toronto (Chad), but he will not want any different matchup if the Flyers lose to the Sabres (like Edmonton, Scott) if that occurs or facing GM Joel (Vancouver) with Vancouver and Detroit in.  Part of the reason we have this team going is because no seeds 9 through 16 are expected to win.  If one does, Andrew likely doesn't meet Chad's, expectedly weak second round team in Toronto and Andrew will find battles in almost all other series.  So if the favorites win in the NHLP, Andrew is fine as long as the Flyers keep winning.  When they stop, so does he.

This would be a much closer series if GM Andrew was healthy.  He hasn't been since Malkin went down and the fact that he is here, with any hope, says a lot about the GM he is.  GM Andrew understands what it takes to win, building a Champion, but it doesn't appear that will be in LA this season.  GM Charlie has high hopes for his CTR #3 Rangers and why shouldn't he.  Ovechkin is enough to ensure any GM has at least an opportunity.  Charlie is a 6 point favorite, and Ovie is predicted to only get 5 points.  That could be the first two games of the series if he gets hot, so Andrew will be holding his breath each Washington game.  Where Charlie could be hurt is in Tampa Bay, where he is expected to get 9 points to Andrew's 8.  If the Bolts don't score, the series tightens.  A sweep outside of Washington or Anaheim will do Andrew no good, as all players are matched up.  There is also a question of Kopecky?  Will he play, as Andrew is counting on him for 3 points.  All in all, this would be an amazing upset and one we just cannot count on happening.

Los Angeles (To win the Cup) - It is hard not to keep harping on major injuries.  Andrew has a bunch of sloppy seconds and misfits that no one else wanted.  Castaways that were all dumped to the minors at one point or another.  After saying that, if Callahan was playing, we'd be very excited about the potential for a monstrous upset.  Now barring something that we struggle to fathom, Andrew will be out early.  If he could ever move into round two, upsets and low seeds could help.  Sp Pittsburgh winning with Buffalo knocking out Philly (painful to Andrews other team in Chicago) and either Chicago or Montreal also winning NHL series.  Maybe a Pittsburgh and Chicago finals or at the minimum the Pens and Andrew could pull nothing short of a total miracle.  We have seen miracles win a series before, but not win a Cup.  In the NHLP, it just isn't something that happens.

NY Rangers (To win the Cup) - There are no sure things in the NHLP.  GM Charlie is lets say, a safe bet, to win round one.  He'd have to have a lot of things that are looking good for him go bad in a hurry.  If Ovie blows a spleen, those kind of things, would be the only way to stop this team in round one.  After that, we have Charlie meeting himself (Miami) in round two with Miami being the better team and moving on.  So to change that Washington must go far and Tampa Bay winning would make this a team you don't want to play in round two.  Outside Visnovsky Charlie has no Western matchup so he'd need Washington, Philly, Tampa or Montreal from the East and Washington and Philly could meet in the Eastern Conference Finals in the NHL, about best case for Charlie.  Washington going to the finals would likely get Ovie's name on the Cup for the second straight year if Charlie's Rangers can get out of the first two rounds, where he'd be weakest in round two.  It isn't expected to happen, and isn't a 'safe bet', but this team is set up for making some noise and no one can be at all surprised if they win it all.

Man, the difference a player makes.  If Morrow is in, GM Tyson could be a favorite to win round one.  However, if Dallas didn't choke on the final day, Tyson would not be in anyhow as he would have been out to Indianapolis.  So Tyson put himself in this spot and will likely pay for it against a tough Surf team.  GM Charlie may be saying the same thing, the difference a player makes!  What if Zetterberg doesn't play?  He is ruled out already for game one!  The clear difference here is the 7.5 extra player games Charlie is to get in this series, 41 to 33.5.  It is only a 4 point difference so Tyson could gain in several ways.  Charlie is expected to outscore Tyson 12-9 in the Detroit-Phoenix series, with Zetterberg getting a point per game, so if Tyson can even that out, we are now only talking of a one point series or it Zetterberg doesn't play at all, a two point Tyson advantage.  A longer Vancouver series could help Tyson win this series as long as Samuelsson doesn't have a first round like he did last season when he scored 11 points.  Tyson can also turn the series on Erat not playing 6.5 games or Bergeron 6.

St Louis (To win the Cup) - Well Cleveland was the CTR#13 last season and they won it all for GM Tyson in his first NHLP season, so you could say GM Tyson is starting with a better chance than he had last season.  That would be a great way to look at it, for this team does have two Vancouver players, so if Tyson can win round one, a favorable matchup after that with some crazy upsets elsewhere, and this team can get stronger as they play.  A second round with Phoenix and Pittsburgh would be a 5 man team with his Canucks.  The problem really will be round one, but with Zetterberg out, maybe #10 is also a lucky number for GM Tyson.

Miami (To win the Cup) - We really do like GM Charlie's teams this year.  Every year we like a number of teams but only one can win each year.  Last season Indianapolis (Matt) looked so strong on a run by the Capitals and his season ended early with them out in the first round.  We think the same can happen here it Detroit goes out to Phoenix, something GM Charlie just cannot have if the Surf are to truly go all the way.  Charlie could still have a 3 or 4 man second round team without Detroit, so you won't want to play this team with 6 or 7 guys in round two.  We have Charlie playing himself in round two and this Surf team winning before the Wings run finally ends.  So if that run doesn't end and Detroit can go all the way, Charlie could be an easy winner in the end.  There is hope outside of Detroit as long as Detroit isn't out to quick.  Then again, without Zetterberg in round one, GM Charlie will see first hand the difference a player makes.

This is a battle of the low lights.  The CTR low lights anyhow.  CTR #15 and #13 in round one.  Poor GM Joel must just shake his head in Vancouver when he sees this series.  A few other GM's likely feel the same.  The CTR spot worked fine for GM Tyson last season but we don't see GM Chad being able to have the same magic with GM Scott's favorite number.  If Tampa Bay does not get 6.5 games and GM Chad grab about 17 points from that series, this one will go GM Ryan's way.  Brouwer isn't expected to get a lot, but is he even playing?  Longer Washington-New York and Chicago series can really hurt GM Chad's chances.  With Semin and Gaborik only looking at 8 points in 5 games, a 6 or 7 game series could spell victory for Ryan.

Boston (To win the Cup) - Imagine if the Rangers and Hawks were out on the final weekend, as they both should be?  Ryan would only have 3 players in the first round.  Now he has hope, hope to win round one and hope to run on a Chicago return to the NHL Stanley Cup.  Semin just isn't a playoff warrior but has always had the potential and maybe this is his season to light it up as Washington has finally seemed to understand the team first concept.  Brown is gold and would help the second round scoring if he can be there for Ryan.  All in all this is a very long shot, about as bad as it gets in the NHLP, but winning round one is possible and after that it is all up to the hockey Gods for Boston!

Toronto (To win the Cup) - No one will stop Chad if Tampa Bay are gangbusters and go all the way.  Well, that is no one will stop him in the finals.  Round one, no so much.  Chad must have his Bolts really dominate the first round and must have them win.  They can provide the scoring in the later rounds and that is the only way lucky 13 will be Chad's favorite number as well.  Bolts or Bust!

If Crosby was to play one game, we predict GM Chad to actually win this series.  If he was to play them all, Chad would be around 35 first round points.  Without Crosby he is a coin flip versus GM Shawn.  Make no mistake, GM Chad has a great team and at CTR #5 one could argue a horrible match up for GM Shawn CTR #1.  Can you believe that, #5 and #1 and someone is out in round one.  Change the format!!!  This is going to be a battle.  Halifax cup hopes could end to a Crosby-less team in the first round?  Seriously!  Chad is expected to hit 42.5 player games or 36 without Crosby to 37 for Shawn.  So if Crosby is to get zero, we are at 25-25 with GM Chad really hard pressed to get more points, leaving GM Shawn to come up shy.  Is Hamhuis playing?  That is two points.  Henrik Sedin is only expected to get a point a game, which seems so light which would leave Chad in big trouble if that is true.  A sweep in Washington or Philadelphia would great help Chad.  If any player in this series has a huge 8 to 10 points or fails to reach his number, that will be the downfall.  Well, if Crosby doesn't play a game!

Pittsburgh (To win the Cup) - It is Pittsburgh for Chad and if not Pittsburgh, how about the Habs.  The options drop quickly after Pittsburgh is out.  Round one could easily go Chad's way, even without Crosby and could buy Chad a couple more weeks for Sid to find his bearings.  What a most memorable story this would be with Chad hanging onto Crosby, seemingly costing him a playoff spot if he did and it did not.  His guys are so hot right now, all firing.  Crosby joining the team would only make the 007-11 a very realistic possibility.  If Chad doesn't hit 25 in round one, he is likely going to be out, so his players must continue to do it and let the Pens take it from there with a healthy Sid after round one.

Halifax (To win the Cup) - Every point will be critical in round one.  CTR #1's haven't would since GM Marcel did it in Florida but we still give credit, this is one well put together team.  The fact that they may not make it out of round one won't be anything more then the wrong team at the wrong time.  If Shawn goes to round two, he could have a full 7 players including Sedin and Briere.  Can win on any run by Vancouver, Washington, Philadelphia or Boston, without matchups!!!  The problem is we have all the top seeds winning round one, meaning round two's opponent would be CTR #2, Quebec (Matt), the likely only other NHLP team that could also have a full 7 players still in.  If there is two upsets with a lower seed not winning, that second round matchup doesn't occur.  If it does it could be a battle of the Titans with Shawn still winning and maybe then winning it all.  The rest of the league may be cheering for this team to be gone or for some NHL upsets, for when you are rated CTR #1, it is for a reason.  That is because you are feared!

In classic NHLP style, you have two of the three lowest scoring teams playing head to head in the first round.  There are teams expected to get 25 and 28 and lose, but not here where 15 points should be enough to go to the second round of the NHLP playoffs.  GM Marcel lost Kopitar the night of the Trading Deadline and Staal this past weekend leaving him with only 5 players.  We can't even pretend there is anything positive about this, well, other then playing the New Orleans Wolverines.  GM Shawn isn't expected to score into the 20's in round one., or for any round this season.  No player is expected to get 5 in round one and if a sweep occurs in the Philadelphia-Buffalo series, where Shawn is expected to outscore Marcel 11-3, New Orleans just might not be going to the Conference Finals after all.

Florida (To win the Cup) - Not many teams can do much in the NHLP playoffs with just 5 players.  No stars, no big names and no one that could get 10 in a round.  When you are CTR #16, that usually means you can't win.  We just don't see it happening, but we can see a first round upset for GM Marcel if a sweep occurs with Philadelphia or Buffalo.

Halifax (To win the Cup) - Well so far so good.  You get to play GM Marcel's Florida team in round one, where you'd be an underdog against any other team but Calgary (Jr).  So GM Shawn has got the first break he needs.  Expected to play Ottawa (Mike and Ray) in round two before losing to the eventual NHLP Champions, Quebec (Matt) in the Semi-Finals.  That can change if Quebec gets knocked out but Shawn will need Philadelphia to carry him and maybe a match versus the Canucks.  Will need second round scoring help from Pittsburgh and Boston so will hope for a 5 player second round where he losses only Pominville.  If the Flyers go to the finals, we'd not be shocked if this team follows.  If the Flyers win or go out 4 straight in round one, we'd not be surprised if this team follows.
